BACKGROUND

Located on a scenic 150 acres of rolling farmland, with the Bacon Creek winding its way through the middle is Cardinal Farms. Cardinal Farms in Bonnieville, Kentucky, has been in operation almost a quarter of a century and continues to be owned by the Clausons, the family who began it. The dream began with Don Clauson in 1966 the first year he went to Louisville to watch the World's Championship Horseshow. It was the last year that MY MY showed, and upon seeing My My in the ring he was hooked. He knew he had to be involved with Saddlebreds. Eventually, Don bought his grandfather's farm and built the training facilities.

The trainers at Cardinal Farms are Adam and Desiree Clauson, son and daughter-in-law of Don and Janet Clauson. It was at Cardinal Farms that Don and Janet's son, Adam Clauson, was raised. While growing up on the farm Adam gained a deep admiration and love for the American Saddlebred. He knew from the time that he was very young that he would be a Saddlebred trainer one day. After several years of apprenticeship at several other barns, including the Tabor's 3 T Farm in Scottsville, Kentucky, he came home to take over the training duties at Cardinal Farms.

Desiree Clauson also grew up around horses, and began riding with her aunt at the age of three. She started taking lessons with Debbie Wathen and later moved to study under Lillian Shively. During those days, everyone on the county fair circuit knew everyone else, and Desiree showed at the county fairs quite a bit. It was through this circuit that she met Adam. They had known each other for some time when she finally moved to Cardinal Farms to begin teaching and training in 1991and in 1992 they were married.
